I have lived in Riyadh going on for two years and it has rained maybe twice and only one of those was heavy. These past few weeks it has been raining off and on a bit, nothing serious. Today it started pouring like crazy and I was happy seeing how we never get it. The rain clear all the dust off of everything and clears the air so that is always nice. Sadly though Riyadh is not equipped for rain what so ever. Anytime it rains you see cars tore up all over the place and the streets are flooded. The city has no drainage system what so ever.
So today as the rain started pouring so did my house. Yes I am flooded as we speak. Rain started pouring in from the windows and the air conditioners. I threw blankets, towels, clothing and everything I had to stop it but nothing worked. It was just pouring in like crazy from all the rooms. My furniture is sitting in water. I tried to move what I could. And what can I do about it? Really nothing. All of my cloths are soaked and the mop is getting nothing seeing how its over an inch of standing water. Thank God my living room and kitchen are ok, thats where I am at. I literally feel sick right and was hyperventilating from this mess earlier. It stopped and I was happy but here it goes again. I really do not care if a place does not get much rain but its ridiculous that he city and home builders do not prepare for it just in case. Look at what we have to go through. Just look at all these pictures of the flood.

Oooo I am so sorry sis! What part of Riyadh do you live in? We are in Rawdah. My husband tried to go to work directly after the storm and had to come back home because his usual routes were blocked: a felled street lamp and over in Granada the underpass on King Abdullah was totally flooded. It was really exciting and scary at the same time. The noise was so loud that I thought it was a tornado at first (it was hail). My son almost cried. There was a little school bus parked outside of our window, the kids inside were screaming and crying. My husband said a dumpster almost crashed into his car because the winds were so strong and moving things. I have never seen anything like this storm and I've lived in Riyadh 3 1/2 years!
ReplyDeleteAsalamu alaikum, Insha Allah things are getting easier for you. I am reading another of your wonderful posts while searching for news on the floods, Alamadulilah Alamdulilah my children returned home early today just as the storm started, if they had been as usual time I dare not think... I truely hope the people who are supposedly in charge will be exposed for their failures to create a proper infrastructure and to enforce safety and building laws, May Allah Help and protect all those suffering at this time. Take care sister,
ReplyDeletehello!
ReplyDeleteive come to cross to your blog because i was searching for relevant articles regarding heavy rain fall yesterday in riyadh which was informed by my friend..
i am currently located in the western province of the kingdom and same scenario could happen here since we also dont have proper drainage system in here. hope this unfortunate happenings can be resolved by the authorities in a soon.
stay safe!
I thought Saudi Arabia would learn from the Jeddah Floods, rather afford a drainage system, then affording fixing up, utter Chaos, hope you guys get cooler weather, and your rooms dont get badly damaged

Alaykum Salam, This is indeed crazy. It took my husband over two hours to get home because it rained for 15 minutes ODD. I was cleaning the house like crazy all day and mopping over and over and it had that wet forest smell alhumdullah for bukhoor. Sadly the bedroom furniture is wilted on the bottom from sitting it water for so long. And it cost what a vacation would and only a year old so I am really sad about that :(. Its so sad that this country is so rich yet the citizens can not even get a dash of rain without fear of some kind astagfurAllah :(
ReplyDeleteAssalamu alaikum,
ReplyDeleteOh no!!! SubhanAllah! When they were showing the floods in Tennessee I was wondering about your family there, and when I read about the floods in Riyadh, again you came to my mind.
Oh bummer about your bedroom set :( I remember how excited you were when you got it...
